GGK’s note

A personal favourite. Kinoko Kraft is a fine artist, and this evokes the period beautifully, for me. Interesting, isn’t it, that American, Canadian (another favourite) and British hardcovers, all so different, shared the image of a woman with an owl on her shoulder. My joke at the time: it’s a good thing there is a woman in the book with an owl on her shoulder. Incidentally, the Canadian hardcover of Arbonne has the most beautiful paper of any book I’ve ever published. It is gorgeous. For another example of how this can subtly affect one’s reaction to a book, try to find the American hardcover of Lisa Jardine’s Worldly Goods (mentioned in the bibliography for Tigana) … the weight and beauty of the book are wonderfully complementary to the subject. — GGK
